Growing Your Practice with Google Reviews: Do’s and Don’ts.

According to Medical Economics, approximately 65% of physicians have no online reviews at all.

94% of patients use online reviews to evaluate providers, and 77% use these reviews as their first step in finding a new doctor.

Positive online reviews are critical to growing your practice:

They build trust with potential patients and referral sources and boost your ranking in Google searches, which will help position your practice as a leader in the field.

Navigating the world of Google Reviews can be tricky. Here’s a quick guide to the key do’s and don’ts to build a thriving online reputation for your practice.

Do:

  • Ask for Reviews at the Right Time and Make it Easy: The ideal moment to request a review is after a positive patient experience, such as a successful appointment or resolved health concern. You can have a QR code handy or send a link via text or email – do it right there, and don’t let the happy moment fade.

  • Make it part of your surveys:  As suggested in “The Doctor’s Guide To Profitability,” you can ask if your patients want to leave a review in the last part of the survey. If yes - and the answers to the survey are positive - share the link or QR to facilitate the process.

  • Respond to All Reviews: Thank happy patients for their feedback and acknowledge concerns raised in negative reviews. Show patients you care by addressing their issues promptly and professionally.

  • Focus on the Patient Experience: At the heart of positive reviews lies an experience. Ensure your staff is fully trained to provide a visit to remember being caring and efficient, appointments run smoothly, and wait times are minimized.

Don’t:

  • Do not underestimate Google’s ability to identify questionable practices related to reviews. We will not outsmart them; getting a red flag will follow your practice forever.

  • Do not offer Incentives for Reviews: Google frowns upon offering “free” gifts or discounts in exchange for reviews. Keep it genuine and focus on the value your practice provides.

  • Do not pressure Patients: A simple “Would you be willing to leave us a review?” is best. Don’t coerce patients into leaving positive reviews.

  • Do not ignore Negative Reviews: Negative reviews happen. Address them directly, apologize for any shortcomings, and explain how you’re working to improve.

  • Do not violate HIPAA: Remember the patient privacy regulations like HIPAA. Avoid mentioning any specifics, such as patient identifiers or condition details, when responding to reviews.

By following these do’s and don’ts, you can effectively leverage Google Reviews to build confidence and position your practice for success. Remember, a commitment to exceptional patient care is the foundation for a flourishing online reputation.
